Deer Harvest By State

Deer harvest reports are useful because deer hunters use them to identify the densest deer populations. Some states even break down their reports by county, game type and hunter type, or show them over time so that you can identify trends.

Most deer harvest reports are funded in part by the purchase of hunting licenses and tags. Other funding that has come from the government has been cut drastically or eliminated altogether. You will notice that some of the states have not updated their deer harvest statistics for a couple of years due to lack of funds.

Hunters provide an important service to the rest of the community by controlling the state's deer herd and by reporting information. Most states collect the information from ear tags on harvested deer. Other states may also require harvest report cards from hunters. In one state in 1980 only 40% of the hunters who harvested a deer turned in their report card. The loss of information required the state office to estimate the deer harvest, making it harder for hunters to plan their hunts and harder for the state to estimate harvest levels to allow.

Most hunters follow through with their responsibility to report deer they harvest, and they believe reporting is important. The harvest reports are reviewed by the state and used to access the impact of last years harvest. This helps them determine possible changes to next year's license allocation, bag limits, season lengths and policy changes.

Deer Harvest Reports & Information By State

Over the past few years the funding for the publishing of deer harvest and deer kill records have been cut and therefore most states do not have the current information available online however if you call your local Department of Natural Resourses (DNR) they may have this deer harvest information available in other forms. Next to each state is the dates of the most current Deer Harvest report that we could find. If the following state websites have a search bar on them type in deer harvest to find the most current deer harvest statistics available online.
