How To Hunt Deer with Attractants

Whitetail Deer Attractant Types and how to use them.

There are many products available today that are made to attract deer for hunting. Before you consider buying deer attractant always check local rules and regulations before baiting or feeding deer. It's a good idea to visit your States DNR Department of Resources or Conservation department Website that lists laws and regulations. Many of the old time hunters relied on natural deer attractants such as food sources. Corn, soy beans, and white oak acorns are very attractive feeding sources for deer. So if you are hunting in a State where the use of attractants is not allowed you can choose to hunt near where they feed, travel or bed down.

If your State allows the use of attractants to lure deer for hunting there are many types of bait available. Honey acorn buck jam deer attractant comes in either liquid or a gel. The mineral lick liquid is poured on the ground or over stumps and logs. This type of mineral lick can also be mixed with grains or other food type baits. Deer like sweets so any lick that contains honey or molasses will keep the deer coming back for more.

Deer cane deer food contains minerals that react with moisture and release vapors trails that attract deer. Deer cane comes in a power form that you mix with water or a premade liquid or gel. You want to clear the vegetation and brush in a 4 foot radius before placing the mineral lick down. You can pour the liquid over a stump or log and let it soak in and drip onto the soil. Deer will visit the site and keep coming back infact, they can be quite possessive about their new found mineral spot. Bucks will mark this spot by rubbing and scraping even rolling in the mineral lick. There are also deer lick blocks available for time released feeding over longer periods that draw many deer over time.

Scent Drag is a rope that you drag through the grass behind you. The drag has a clip at one end for your belt and wicks at the other end that mimic a doe walking through the brush and spreading her attractive doe scent. Some of the buck attractants available to use on a scent drag are Doe urine and Estrus (natural doe-in-heat urine) and Dominant Buck Urine. With a scent drag you can lead deer right to your deer stand or blind.

Scrapes are where deer mark tree limbs. Natural scrapes and manmade mock scrapes are often used with attractants that smell like an invading buck. Mature bucks do not like other deer in their territory and bucks will paw the ground and chew and twist the branch where the scrape is installed. Small branches along deer travel roots that are between 3-5 foot tall are idea for scrapes and attractant.

Scent keys are felt strips that look like a key that you dip into a bottle of liquid scent and setup. A scent key is usually used with doe urine or estrus to trigger the sexual attraction instinct of whitetail bucks.

No matter what type of deer attractant you use always remember that you will never attract a deer if they smell you. Make sure to take as many precautions to get rid of human scent before you scout, walk to your stand or set up a bait area.
